Lucila Ohno-Machado

Blockchain Applications in Clinical Research and Healthcare Quality Improvement

Lucila Ohno-Machado is a biomedical engineer and the chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics and associate dean for informatics and technology at UC San Diego. She is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the National Academy of Medicine. Professor Ohno-Machado earned an MD from the University of São Paulo School of Medicine in Brazil in 1987. She also has a Master of Health Administration from Escola de Administração de Empresas de São Paulo, Brazil. She obtained her PhD from Stanford University.

Schallum Pierre

Schallum Pierre is a Scientific and Ethics Officer within IID (Institute Intelligence and Data) at Université Laval and part-time professor at Université Saint-Paul. As a researcher in ethics of big data, he is interested in the issue of identity in its technological, digital, anthropological, ideological and historical aspects. He also works as advisor to the ethics commitee of CHU (Centre hospitalier universitaire) Université Laval. Beside this, Schallum Pierre is the president of REED (engl. DEEN - Data ethics expertise network), a nonprofit corporation that aims to audit information systems, to democratize revocable consent with blockchain and to educate citizens on the protection of personal data. Before co-founding DEEN, he co-founded the company Blockchain Citz, which developed, in collaboration with the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal, a blockchain use case for chronic disease self-management.

Marco Cuomo is an Applied Technology Innovation Manager, responsible for exploring, engineering and implementing new technologies such as Blockchain, IoT and API Management. He has been with Novartis since 2005. For the last two years, his focus has been on Blockchain and exploring various use cases for Pharma. He began his career as a programmer in 1988 and has held various positions of increasing responsibilities in software development, engineering, operations, service management and solution design.

He continues to treat his patients on a weekly basis at a clinic in Leeds.

Amber Hartley has been building strategic partnerships for over 20 years. Currently, she serves as the Chief Strategy Officer for BurstIQ, a Denver-based company that provides a global data network for managing and exchanging identity and health data. The company’s secure data platform enables organizations to connect data silos, manage data as trusted profiles, and enforce ownership and compliant data access from a single data point to petabyte datasets. Prior to joining BurstIQ, Amber ran the innovation center at Catholic Health Initiatives, one of the largest health systems in the U.S. She holds a B.S. in Animal Physiology & Neuroscience from University of California at San Diego and a Master of Biotechnology from San Jose State University.
